Mental Attitude: Puzzles Can Keep Your Mind Sharp. Researchers tracked over 19,000 British adults for 25 years and
found that participants who more regularly engaged in puzzles, such as crosswords and Sudoku, scored higher on
assessments of their memory, attention, and reasoning skills. International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry, May 2019
Health Alert: Over 600,000 Opioid Abusers Raising Children in the US. The results of a nationwide survey indicate
that more than 600,000 American parents with children under the age of 18 are addicted to opioids. Additionally, about
four million parents in the United States (US) have substance abuse problems, such as alcoholism, and many in both
camps suffer from some type of mental illness. Annals of Family Medicine, May 2019
Diet: Whole Grain Contributes to Intestinal Serotonin Production. Past research has demonstrated a link between
elevated blood serotonin levels and higher blood glucose readings. A new study found that whole grain consumption is
associated with lower plasma serotonin levels, which researcher Dr. Kati Hanhineva suspects may explain, at least in part,
why a diet rich in whole grains is associated with a reduced risk for type 2 diabetes.
American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, May 2019
Exercise: Walking and Strength Training Can Decrease the Risk of Liver Disease Death. Among a group of 117,000
adults, researchers observed that those who walked the most each week had a 73% lower risk for cirrhosis-related death
than participants who walked the least. Additionally, the researchers found that the men and women in the study who
walked the most and who also strength trained had an even lower risk for cirrhosis-related death. The researchers hope
these findings will help provide specific exercise recommendations for individuals at risk for cirrhosis and its
complications. Digestive Disease Week, May 2019
Chiropractic: Stretch Hamstrings More Effectively. It has been well established that shortened or tight hamstrings
affect postural alignment, which can contribute to back pain and other musculoskeletal conditions. In a recent study
involving 60 young adults, researchers found that passive hamstring stretching followed by three sets of 10 repetitions of
active knee extension-quadriceps activation exercises were more effective at improving hamstring flexibility than
stretching alone. Doctors of chiropractic often incorporate at-home stretching and exercise recommendations in their
treatment plans for several musculoskeletal conditions. South African Journal of Physiotherapy, April 2019
Wellness/Prevention: Are Smoking and Depression Linked? New research suggests that individuals who are daily
smokers at age 17 have a higher risk for depressive symptoms at age 22 than those who have never smoked. Likewise, the
data indicate that non-smokers with depressive symptoms at age 17 are more likely to be daily smokers by age 22 than
non-smokers without a history of depression. The authors of this study conclude, “During the developmental period from
adolescence to adulthood, cigarette smoking and depressive symptoms are reciprocally associated.”
